5 Important Facts About Tooth Enamel

Almost everyone understands the importance behind brushing your teeth and the role tooth enamel plays in maintaining dental health.

However, many underestimate the unique quality that enamel has and don’t have a complete understanding of how enamel works, which in return makes it far more difficult to take the necessary precautions to ensure they maintain healthy tooth enamel.

Strong Tooth Enamel Is Crucial for Healthy Teeth

Of course, no one wants to see their tooth enamel begin to diminish. Not only can a cavity be painful, but those with enamel erosion are left with a less attractive smile.

With that said, many individuals don’t understand how tooth enamel works and cannot correctly stop any erosion from occurring, despite understanding the vital role enamel plays in dental health. Here are five facts about tooth enamel that should give a better idea as to what enamel is and how to prevent erosion from occurring in your mouth.

Tooth enamel is strong, but it still needs support

Tooth enamel is one of the stronger substances in the human body. Considering the average human jaw can exert 171 pounds of force, this fact is extremely good news.

If tooth enamel were not so durable, people would be much more at risk of dental health concerns, so let’s start by being thankful for the excellent strength of enamel. However, tooth enamel is still vulnerable to erosion, which is why it is important to practice good oral hygiene.

Enamel requires a steady supply of minerals

What’s the secret behind the super-strength of enamel? If you dig down into the construction of enamel, the strength can be attributed to the minerals calcium and phosphate.

Although these two minerals help make tooth enamel remarkably resilient, they require a steady supply of mineral support, which is why fluoride treatment is the most highly recommended way to strengthen your enamel.

Acid producing bacteria cause tooth decay

If tooth enamel is so durable, then why is enamel erosion so common? Quite simply, minerals have a kryptonite, which is acid producing bacteria.

When enamel is exposed to increased amounts of eroding substances, such as sugar then the healthy, supportive minerals go to war against the harmful acid producing bacteria. If the bacteria begins to erode more than the minerals that are in the enamel, then erosion begins to occur.

Excessive force when brushing wears down tooth enamel

Regardless of how hard enamel may be, constantly putting excessive pressure on anything will wear it down over time.

The same concept applies to tooth enamel. When teeth are bombarded continuously with excessive force when brushing, the enamel will begin to weaken, which will eventually lead to chipping or erosion.

Enamel erosion is irreversible

The worst part about enamel erosion is that it is impossible to reverse, meaning once it’s gone it will never grow back. While eroded enamel can be treated artificially, it is best to protect enamel and make it last a lifetime.

Otherwise, expensive filling procedures will be the only option for ensuring the quality of dental health and a great looking smile.

We are always here to help in guiding you on making the best choices for your tooth enamel and oral health. Give us a call and let us help you in making the right decision, and giving you all the information you need to keep your teeth and enamel in good shape.

Tips for Fast Recovery After Tooth Removal

Tooth removal is popular and usually recommended when there is a significant injury to the tooth or in cases of severe tooth decay. The process of recovery after having a tooth removed is a concern for people are about to undergo the process or have done it. In this article, we covered a few tips that may improve the rate of recovery and minimize discomfort.

Tooth removal process does not end after the teeth have been removed. There are some precautions and rules for recovery, which often entails that you to do some things and shun some activities.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Tooth Recovery

Things to do

  • Ensure you take every medication prescribed by the dentist at the right time
  • Ensure you replace the gauze placed on it in time to prevent infections
  • Ensure you only eat foods that are easy on the teeth
  • Drink milkshakes and juices
  • Taking ice cream can also help with recovery.
  • Ensure you keep your head in an elevated position always – do not lie down at all

Things to avoid

  • Try as much as possible to stay away from smoking, chewing tobacco, and alcohol consumption since they are activities that can cause injury to the teeth and gums and halt the process of recovery.
  • Do not use straws when drinking as the sucking can draw the blood clot out of the extraction point, which can be painful and cause infection.
  • Try not to suck on lollipops and toffees – the sucking can affect the extraction area.
  • Stay away from hard foods or foods that need hard biting because it can injure the affected areas and make recovery even more difficult.
  • Do not drink hot food or beverages, as they could injure your nerves – let them cool down a bit.
  • Avoid anything that may cause your gums to bleed or dry up.

A quick glance at the instructions above and you will discover the process is just a process of taking extra care of yourself – consuming good food and staying comfortable. The activities that must be avoided may seem a little hard for people with the habit of smoking, tobacco chewing, chewing candies, or alcohol consumption. Patients must follow the precautions strictly to improve their chances of a full recovery.

What is the catch?

The tooth removal recovery process is easy and fast if you decide to rest and avoid things that could worsen the situation. The affected area will heal on its own without interference. Typically, the first stage of healing should happen between one or two weeks. With time, new bone and gum tissue will develop over the space.

In some cases, missing a tooth can cause your remaining teeth to shift because of the new pressure on them. The dentist can fix this by substituting the missing teeth with implants or bridges.

Final Note

If you develop complications like infection or dry socket, you must reach out to the dentist as soon as you can, and they will provide you with the necessary solution. If the area bleeds, aches, or feels different, do not hesitate to visit the dentist.

Questions to Ask your Dentist about Dental Sedation

dental sedation

Are you deciding on getting an oral procedure done at the dentist but have a substantial amount of anxiety about what may occur? If this sounds like you, you may want to talk to your dentist about dental sedation. Dental sedation can make the process of going to the dentist’s office comfortable and anxiety-free.

Essentially, dental sedation is ideal for patients that may have a fear of the dentist (including the associated sounds and smells), for those that have sensitive teeth, an overreactive gag reflex or have a complex dental issue that may require an extensive period of time. Before undergoing a procedure at the dentist’s office, here are a few questions that you should have answered about dental sedation.

#1 – Is Dental Sedation Right for Me?

During your consultation, we will help you review your available options for dental sedation. This should take into account your age, health, the cause of your anxiety (i.e. childhood fears, past trauma), what particularly worries you about the procedure, physical discomforts, potential drug interactions and anything else that you may have in mind.

We understand the importance of professional dental care while being sensitive to your concerns. We will carefully explain how dental sedation can help you overcome these problems.

#2 – Which Type of Dental Sedation is Right for Me?

You should know that there is not just one catch-all type of dental sedation for every client. Asking your dentist/oral surgeon about which type of dental sedation they use can help you decide. For instance, some offices only offer IV sedation and nitrous oxide—for those that are afraid of needles, this can be a deal-breaker.

Other dental practices may offer other solutions, like oral sedation in pill form, where you may not feel a thing (or remember a thing, for that matter) during the operation. Additionally, the nature of your dental procedure may require general anesthesia, which requires an anesthesiologist to monitor your heart rate and life support functions while you are completely asleep.

#3 – What are the Side Effects or Risks?

It is important to understand that dental procedures have come a long way in recent years. Today's dental sedation techniques are safer and more effective than even a decade ago. However, you should still make it a priority to discuss all the possible side effects with us during a consultation.

This way, we can review your medical history and weigh the pros and cons of each method. While no medical procedure is ever 100 percent safe, you should know that dental sedation requires a close monitoring of your vital signs, especially during general anesthesia. We will review all common complications that come with each type of dental sedation during the consultation.

For instance, while nitrous oxide is the safest method of dental sedation, it can deplete your body’s level of B12. Similarly, if you have issues with healing and bruising, your dentist/oral surgeon should recommend other methods of dental sedation—or rule out your candidacy for the procedure entirely.

Do Dental Veneers Have Any Side Effects?

dental veneers

Similar to just about every other dental restoration, dental veneers have some side effects. Thankfully, the vast majority of these side effects are tolerable. While most patients do not experience an abundance of these problems, the possibility for side effects certainly looms. Here is a closer look at the potential side effects of dental veneers and the extent to which they matter.

Slight Tooth Sensitivity

The dentist must remove some of the enamel to place veneers on the teeth. The enamel is taken off the surface, making the teeth slightly sensitive following the placement of the veneers. People are more likely to experience the sensitivity when enjoying hot or cold foods/beverages.

Irregularities in Color

There is the potential for the veneers to not be the perfect match for the color of the adjacent teeth. Certain dental veneers experience discoloration or staining along their edges. Such discoloration and staining are especially common when the dentist seals the veneers with excess moisture. It is not possible to change the color of dental veneers after attachment.

A Response From the Gum Tissues

The gum tissues might take some time to adjust to the newly-placed veneers. There will likely be some minor inflammation and/or discomfort in the gums. The dentist will take a closer look at any remaining gum tissue inflammation during the post-operative check-up.

General Discomfort

The dental veneer placement procedure has the potential to cause some discomfort. There will be minimal to no pain during and after the procedure. If you are particularly sensitive, take an over the counter medication to treat your pain.

A Higher Risk of Trauma

Those who choose veneers have a slightly elevated risk of trauma. The procedure requires the removal of some tooth enamel to allow the veneer to firmly connect. The tooth is that much more sensitive. It is even possible for the pulp within the tooth to die. In some cases, it makes more sense to have the tooth crowned rather than deal with heightened sensitivity and possible damage to the pulp.

Possible Issues With Placement

It is possible for the teeth to have issues with decay or chipping along the outer portion of the veneers. Other problems can include rough-edged veneers and overhanging veneers. Gum irritation is also possible. Aligning veneer margins with the chewing edges has the potential to chip the veneers. However, removing too little of the surface can cause the veneers to look too thick.

Do not let These Possible Side Effects Detract You From Dental Veneers

Though the issues raised in this article detail the worst possible side effects of dental veneers, the benefits outweigh the risks. By choosing this thin ceramic coating positioned along the outer portion of your teeth, you will have the lovely bright smile you have been hoping for. Your veneers will remedy all issues related to color, shape, size and length. Your dental veneers will likely prove functional and visually pleasing for at least the next 5 to 10 years.

Teeth Grinding FAQ’s

teeth grinding

What are the most common symptoms of teeth grinding?

If you grind your teeth while sleeping, there is a good chance you will experience headaches during the morning, afternoon or evening. Additional symptoms of teeth grinding include muscle aches along the mouth, stiffness in the shoulder/neck area, TMJ pain, sleeping problems and tinnitus ringing in the ear.

What are the long-term implications of teeth grinding?

Let your teeth grinding continue and it will affect your oral health. Teeth grinding causes jaw damage, premature and excessive teeth wear, chipped teeth, cracked teeth and worse.

How do I determine if I have teeth grinding or clenching issues?

The best way to determine if you grind your teeth is to visit with your dentist at least two times per year for a thorough evaluation. The dentist will be able to determine if you grind or clench your teeth. The dentist will also conduct an examination of your neck, head and jaw joints/muscles to determine if there are any issues. In certain instances, it is necessary to take an X-ray.

Why does teeth grinding occur?

Some patients are aware of the fact that they grind their teeth in response to stress, anger and other emotions or events. Even engaging in a physically taxing activity like lifting weights or playing football can cause teeth grinding. However, most people who grind their teeth do so unknowingly while sleeping. Some dentists and medical researchers have linked teeth grinding to the use of caffeine, alcohol, and/or tobacco. Some medical researchers have linked depression to teeth grinding.

Can I stop teeth grinding on my own?

Yes. You have the power to put an end to your teeth grinding. Meet with us to develop the proper strategy for reducing teeth grinding and it will not be long until you make meaningful progress. For example, improving your relaxation techniques can mitigate or completely thwart the grinding. Altering lifestyle habits can also help. Some find wearing a splint or mouth guard at night stops grinding from damaging the teeth and/or jaw.

Why should I have my teeth grinding addressed?

Teeth grinding is terrible for the health, look and quality of your teeth. Allowing your teeth to grind down will only make it difficult to chew food. Teeth grinding causes premature wear of teeth that damage your pearly whites as well as the jaw below.

How does reducing caffeine help prevent teeth grinding from worsening?

Reduce your caffeine intake in the afternoon and evening hours and you will find you enjoy better sleep. You will be that much less likely to grind your teeth while attempting to enjoy a restful night of sleep. Caffeine does hardly anything positive for the body after the morning hours. Caffeine dehydrates the body, promotes nervousness and makes it that much more challenging to sleep. Limit your caffeine intake the morning and early afternoon hours and it will be that much easier to avoid teeth grinding at night.
